Kobe Bryant leads Lakers past Kings, 103-98

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Kobe Bryant scored 19 points and tied a season high with 14 assists despite a nagging left foot injury, and the Los Angeles Lakers kept pace for the Western Conference's final playoff spot by outlasting the Sacramento Kings 103-98 on Saturday night.

Bryant added nine rebounds and facilitated the Lakers' offense for 47 minutes, 37 seconds after Steve Nash exited early in the first quarter with a recurring right hamstring injury. Bryant also passed Lakers great Wilt Chamberlain (31,419 points) for fourth on the NBA's career scoring list, after starting four points shy of the mark.

Dwight Howard added 24 points and 15 rebounds, and Steve Blake scored 15 points for the Lakers (38-36), who stayed even with Utah (38-36) for the eighth and final playoff spot. Los Angeles hosts 10th-place Dallas (36-37) in a critical tilt Tuesday night.

Tyreke Evans had 21 points and nine rebounds, and DeMarcus Cousins added 19 points and 11 rebounds in Sacramento's latest loss. The Lakers won the season series 3-1.

With Bryant engineering the offense, Los Angeles showed some of its best ball movement of the season.

Bryant slipped a pass to Pau Gasol for a fast-break dunk ? and his 13th assist ? to put Los Angeles ahead 98-93 with 4:52 remaining. Gasol also tossed an alley-oop to Howard just before.

Sacramento refused to go away quietly at home. Cousins followed with a free throw and a long jumper, and Evans added a layup to slice the Lakers' lead to two.

After Bryant missed a jumper, Jodie Meeks stripped Evans on a layup attempt at the other end. Bryant hit 1 of 2 free throws to put the Lakers ahead 101-98 with 24 seconds remaining, giving Sacramento one last chance.

Howard blocked Cousins' 3-point attempt. After pleading with the official for a foul, Cousins got the ball back and he forced a 3-point miss. Bryant made two free throws to end a topsy-turvy night for the Lakers on a positive note.

Los Angeles lost Nash with a strained right hamstring just 1:48 into the game. Coach Mike D'Antoni patted Nash on the back before the point guard walked gingerly to the locker room and never returned.

Sacramento surged ahead 37-25 after the first quarter with a frenetic pace that often left the Lakers' frontline in the backcourt. The Kings, who entered the game averaging an NBA-best 108.9 points since the All-Star break, made 15 of their first 21 from the floor.

Sacramento held Bryant scoreless until he hit a pair of free throws with 8:50 remaining in the second quarter. The shots sparked Bryant and the Lakers late in the half, along with a larger-than-normal sprinkling of Los Angeles fans sporting purple and gold throughout the announced sellout crowd of 17,317.

Bryant made a pull-up jumper from the free throw line with 7:54 remaining in the second quarter to eclipse Chamberlain.

Still, Bryant's seventh assist of the half might have been his most important play. He found Blake for a 3-pointer to give the Lakers their first lead of the game, 51-50, before Sacramento went back ahead 57-53 at the break on Isaiah Thomas' 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds left.

Bryant had a bone spur in his left foot that has bothered him for several games. The injury apparently is unrelated to his sprained left ankle, which occurred earlier in Atlanta.

With his foot stiffening up when he sits, Bryant came out for just 23 seconds.

Bryant finished a thunderous dunk down the lane and added two free throws and a pair of assists, rallying the Lakers back with a 14-1 run to close the third quarter. Los Angeles led 82-75 entering the fourth.

The Kings had scored at least 100 points in 20 of the previous 23 games, including 11 straight at home.

NOTES: Bryant has tossed 14 assists two other times this season. His career high is 15 assists against Washington on Feb. 12, 2002. ... Cousins was called for a technical foul in the second quarter for slamming his hand on the scorer's table after officials whistled Thompson for a foul. ... Kings F James Johnson rejoined the team and was shooting around before the game. He sat out his eighth straight game because of personal reasons.

HTC One 64GB will arrive as AT&T exclusive video

Planning to snag that maxed out HTC One in the US? AT&T is where you'll have to go, then. The 64GB variant of the device is an AT&T exclusive, as revealed by a recently uploaded video to the service provider's YouTube channel. The 32GB One will also be on offer, though there's no word on exactly how much either will be priced at or an exact arrival date -- April is the most specific we've heard from HTC. Verizon is also expected to carry the device, of course, but AT&T will certainly be "the one" for folks needing that doubled storage space on a two-year agreement. Check out the video for yourself after the break.

Report: Suspect in Colorado prison chief slaying may have been released too early

Colorado Department of Corrections / Reuters

By Gil Aegerter, Staff Writer, NBC News

The man suspected of killing Colorado's corrections chief may have been released from prison four years early because of a clerical mistake, NBC station KUSA of Denver reported late Friday.

KUSA said that court documents released by the state showed that Evan Ebel pleaded guilty to assaulting a prison guard while serving time for breaking into a car, having an illegal gun and carjacking a man. Under his plea agreement, KUSA said, Ebel's four-year term for assaulting the guard should have been served consecutively to the eight-year sentence he had been serving.

But the assault sentence was entered into a computer system as concurrent -- served at the same time, KUSA said. There's still a possibility that a judge changed the sentence, KUSA said:

Although the prosecutor in the Ebel's case does not specifically remember the sentence, he says it was his policy to never offer a concurrent sentence to someone already in prison.

If the judge changed the sentence, it's not reflected in the court minutes.

9Wants to Know is ordering a transcript of the court hearing to see what exactly the judge said during sentencing.

Ebel was freed in Jan. 28 after nearly eight years in prison.?

He is suspected of killing Tom Clements, executive director of the state Department of Corrections, on March 19. Clements was shot dead apparently after answering the doorbell at his home outside Colorado Springs.

Ebel is also suspected in the March 17 killing of a Domino?s pizza delivery man outside Denver. Authorities have speculated that Ebel used the man's uniform to get Clements to come to the door.

A Domino's uniform was found in the car Ebel was driving when he was killed in a shootout with deputies in Texas on March 21.

Picking apart photosynthesis: New insights could lead to better catalysts for water splitting

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Chemists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory believe they can now explain one of the remaining mysteries of photosynthesis, the chemical process by which plants convert sunlight into usable energy and generate the oxygen that we breathe. The finding suggests a new way of approaching the design of catalysts that drive the water-splitting reactions of artificial photosynthesis.

"If we want to make systems that can do artificial photosynthesis, it's important that we understand how the system found in nature functions," says Theodor Agapie, an assistant professor of chemistry at Caltech and principal investigator on a paper in the journal Nature Chemistry that describes the new results.

One of the key pieces of biological machinery that enables photosynthesis is a conglomeration of proteins and pigments known as photosystem II. Within that system lies a small cluster of atoms, called the oxygen-evolving complex, where water molecules are split and molecular oxygen is made. Although this oxygen-producing process has been studied extensively, the role that various parts of the cluster play has remained unclear.

The oxygen-evolving complex performs a reaction that requires the transfer of electrons, making it an example of what is known as a redox, or oxidation-reduction, reaction. The cluster can be described as a "mixed-metal cluster" because in addition to oxygen, it includes two types of metals -- one that is redox active, or capable of participating in the transfer of electrons (in this case, manganese), and one that is redox inactive (calcium).

"Since calcium is redox inactive, people have long wondered what role it might play in this cluster," Agapie says.

It has been difficult to solve that mystery in large part because the oxygen-evolving complex is just a cog in the much larger machine that is photosystem II; it is hard to study the smaller piece because there is so much going on with the whole. To get around this, Agapie's graduate student Emily Tsui prepared a series of compounds that are structurally related to the oxygen-evolving complex. She built upon an organic scaffold in a stepwise fashion, first adding three manganese centers and then attaching a fourth metal. By varying that fourth metal to be calcium and then different redox-inactive metals, such as strontium, sodium, yttrium, and zinc, Tsui was able to compare the effects of the metals on the chemical properties of the compound.

"When making mixed-metal clusters, researchers usually mix simple chemical precursors and hope the metals will self-assemble in desired structures," Tsui says. "That makes it hard to control the product. By preparing these clusters in a much more methodical way, we've been able to get just the right structures."

It turns out that the redox-inactive metals affect the way electrons are transferred in such systems. To make molecular oxygen, the manganese atoms must activate the oxygen atoms connected to the metals in the complex. In order to do that, the manganese atoms must first transfer away several electrons. Redox-inactive metals that tug more strongly on the electrons of the oxygen atoms make it more difficult for manganese to do this. But calcium does not draw electrons strongly toward itself. Therefore, it allows the manganese atoms to transfer away electrons and activate the oxygen atoms that go on to make molecular oxygen.

A number of the catalysts that are currently being developed to drive artificial photosynthesis are mixed-metal oxide catalysts. It has again been unclear what role the redox-inactive metals in these mixed catalysts play. The new findings suggest that the redox-inactive metals affect the way the electrons are transferred. "If you pick the right redox-inactive metal, you can tune the reduction potential to bring the reaction to the range where it is favorable," Agapie says. "That means we now have a more rational way of thinking about how to design these sorts of catalysts because we know how much the redox-inactive metal affects the redox chemistry."

The paper in Nature Chemistry is titled "Redox-inactive metals modulate the reduction potential in heterometallic manganese-oxido clusters." Along with Agapie and Tsui, Rosalie Tran and Junko Yano of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are also coauthors. The work was supported by the Searle Scholars Program, an NSF CAREER award, and the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. X-ray spectroscopy work was supported by the NIH and the DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences. Synchrotron facilities were provided by the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource, operated by the DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

Razer Edge Pro review: can a tablet double as a gaming PC?

Razer Edge Pro review can a tablet double as a gaming PC

Portable gaming isn't what it once was. Sure, you can still snag a handheld device from Sony or Nintendo, but today's video game industry is far more diverse. Gamers on the go have no shortage of hardware to pick from: tablets, smartphones, gaming laptops and purpose-built handhelds are redefining what a mobile gaming platform is. Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan must have felt the winds of change blowing his way when he cooked up Project Fiona, now known as the Razer Edge. The company's marketing material frames the curious device as an all-in-one gaming arsenal; it's a tablet, says the product page, as well as a PC and console. Above all, it's modular, a souped-up tablet with a small collection of docks and cradles designed to scratch your gaming itch from all angles. All told, Razer calls it the most powerful tablet in the world. Kitted out with the specs of a mid-range gaming laptop, it may very well be that -- but we couldn't let the proclamation pass without giving it the once-over ourselves.

Chinese regulator calls for tighter supervision of Apple

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc has come under criticism from a Chinese marketplace regulator, which called for stronger supervision of the iPhone-maker's consumer policies within the country, according to state-run media.

On Thursday, the official China National Radio cited a Thursday notice from the State Administration for Industry and Commerce that urged authorities to protect consumers' rights in accordance with the law. According to CNR's website report, the notice mentions Apple but stops short of specifying what exactly they need to go after and how to do so.

The notice, CNR said, was in response to widespread reports since March 15 on how Apple's after-sales service had hurt Chinese consumers.

Apple was singled out on March 15 by state-run China Central Television in an annual corporate malpractice expose. Other media outlets have since taken up the baton, focusing on the company's warranty policy on Mac laptops, which critics say is shorter than in other countries.

The Communist Party mouthpiece, the People's Daily, ran an editorial Wednesday attacking Apple for its "unparalleled arrogance".

An Apple spokesman said the company would not discuss regulatory matters.

Apple's popularity has helped offset some of the state-run attacks, which has incited strong push-back from many Chinese Internet users for what they see as unfair treatment doled out to the iPhone maker.

Apple looks to China not just as its main production base, but also to spur growth as smartphone penetration in mature markets near saturation. CEO Tim Cook sees the world's No. 2 economy as virgin expansion territory, and Apple mentions the region in every quarterly results report.

It said in a statement on Saturday that it respected Chinese consumers and that its warranty policies were roughly the same worldwide with specific adjustments to adhere to Chinese law.

PHILADELPHIA During embryonic development, animals generate many different types of cells, each with a distinct function and identity.

"Although the identities of these cells remain stable under normal conditions, some cells can be persuaded to take on new identities, through reprogramming," says Ben Stanger, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

Researchers have been able to reprogram cells experimentally, but few have shown that cells can change their identities under normal physiological conditions in the body, particularly in mammals.

In the cover article of this month's issue of Genes and Development, Stanger, PhD candidate Kilangsungla Yanger, Yiwei Zong, PhD, and their colleagues, did just that in the liver of a mouse. Stanger is also an investigator in the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute and the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology.

The adult liver contains two major cell types hepatocytes and biliary cells that differ dramatically in appearance and function. Hepatocytes are the main cell type in the liver, where they synthesize proteins and other macromolecules, and detoxify toxic substances. Biliary cells, on the other hand, line the bile ducts, which carry bile from the liver to the small intestine to help digest fats.

Using a sensitive method to tag and track how cells develop and differentiate, the researchers found that conditional expression of an activated Notch1 gene converted hepatocytes into biliary cells. Notch is an important receptor for relaying signals to tell cells how to develop.

What's more, after the researchers injured liver cells with a variety of toxins to stimulate wound healing, they found that over two to three weeks hepatocytes activated a biliary cell program on their own, acquiring the shape and function of biliary cells. These changes were dependent on the activation of endogenous Notch signaling.

"This is direct evidence that cells can be converted from one mature cell type to another in a live animal, as part of a normal response to injury," says Stanger. "We think that augmenting pre-existing cell reprogramming relationships may be another way to engineer cells for the treatment of diseases in which there are not enough bile ducts, such as cholestasis."

(AP) ? Breaking down repeatedly, popular Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt said Thursday he will serve his prison sentence for a 1993 weapons conviction in a case linked to the deadliest terror attack in Indian history.

Dutt broke his silence a week after the Supreme Court sentenced him to five years in prison for illegal possession of weapons supplied by Muslim mafia bosses in Mumbai who were linked to the 1993 terror attack that killed 257 people.

"I respect the Supreme Court's verdict. I have not applied for any pardon," an emotional Dutt told reporters at a news conference held outside his home in Mumbai, India's entertainment capital and home to Bollywood, India's prolific Hindi film industry.

"There are many other people who deserve pardon," he said.

Dutt broke down repeatedly while reading out a statement and hugged his sister, Priya Dutt, who is a Congress party lawmaker from Mumbai.

Dutt said he and his family were devastated by the verdict.

"Right now I am a shattered man. My family is shattered," he said.

Dutt, 53, had appealed an original conviction on the charge of possessing an automatic rifle and a pistol that were supplied to him by men subsequently convicted in a series of bombings that hit Mumbai. A separate charge of conspiring to commit a terrorist act was never proven and he was only convicted of the weapons charge.

The actor has maintained that he knew nothing about the bombing plot and that he asked for the guns to protect his family after receiving threats during sectarian riots in Mumbai. His mother was Muslim and his father Hindu.

The trial stemming from the Mumbai bombings lasted more than 18 years, during which Dutt's acting career soared. He played the lead in several blockbuster films, earning a huge following. He gained enormous popularity for a series of Hindi films in which he played the role of a reformed thug who follows the teachings of nonviolence advocate and Indian independence hero Mohandas Gandhi.

Dutt served 18 months in jail before he was released on bail in 2007 pending the appeal, so three and a half years remain.

The aging actor, who now mainly plays character roles, said he hopes to complete as many of his pending film projects in the four weeks that the court has allowed him before he reports to prison.

"I've got a few days left. I have a lot of work. I have to finish all that work. And I want to spend some time with my family," Dutt said.

Trade analysts say Dutt's jail term will be a huge financial blow for the industry.

Two of Dutt's films are being readied for release, but several other projects are midway and are likely to be delayed.

Legal experts said although Dutt had not sought pardon, any other concerned citizen could apply on his behalf.

Markandeya Katju, a retired Supreme Court judge, said he planned to write separately to the Indian president and to the governor of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, seeking a pardon on Dutt's behalf.

Kerry heads home after Iraq, Afghanistan visits

PARIS (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry headed for home Wednesday after making clandestine journeys to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he delivered a stern warning to Iraqi leaders about Syria and sought to patch up differences with Afghanistan's president.

Kerry was flying back to Washington from Paris, having piggy-backed off President Barack Obama's trip to the Middle East to make unannounced stops in Baghdad and Kabul, as well as following up on Obama's discussions with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

In Iraq, he told Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that shipments of Iranian weapons and fighters through Iraqi territory must stop. In Afghanistan, he put on a show of unity with President Hamid Karzai, whose recent anti-American comments had angered U.S. officials.

Kerry's first foray as secretary of state into the war zones were shrouded in secrecy for security reasons.

Using Jordan ? the last stop on Obama's tour ? as a base, Kerry flew surreptitiously to Baghdad aboard a military transport plane Sunday for meetings with al-Maliki and other Iraq officials just four days after the 10th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.

A key message, officials said, was to warn Iraq that unless it cracks down on Iranian planes and trucks using Iraqi territory to supply Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime with arms, it will not have a voice in ongoing preparations for a post-Assad Syria. He also urged the Iraqis to overcome deep sectarian differences that have fueled consistent instability since the departure of U.S. troops in late 2011, and to hold inclusive, transparent local elections next month.

After returning to Jordan, where he had dinner with Pakistan's army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Kerry flew to Afghanistan on Monday for talks with Karzai amid fears the Afghan leader might be jeopardizing progress in the war against extremism with anti-American rhetoric.

While Kerry was there, the Taliban claimed responsibility for eight suicide bombers attacking a police headquarters in the eastern city of Jalalabad, killing five officers and wounding four.

Karzai infuriated U.S. officials earlier this month by accusing Washington of colluding with Taliban insurgents to keep Afghanistan weak even as the Obama administration pressed ahead with plans to hand off security responsibility to Afghan forces and end NATO's combat mission by the end of next year.

But after their talks, which coincided with the U.S. military ceding control of its last detention facility in Afghanistan, Kerry brushed aside concerns about Karzai's comments.

"We're on the same page," Kerry told reporters. "I don't think there is any disagreement between us and I am very, very comfortable with the president's explanation."

Karzai said he had been trying to make the point that if the Taliban really wanted foreign troops out of Afghanistan they should stop killing people.

Speaking to staffers at the embassy in Kabul before he left Tuesday, Kerry joked about the rapprochement, noting that the weather before his arrival had been cold and rainy. "President Karzai and I stood up and it was like the sun had been shining forever between us," he said to laughter. "It was wonderful."

Kerry then flew to Paris, where he met French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius to discuss the crisis in Syria and also promoted a new trans-Atlantic trade agreement that the Obama administration is pushing.

Land prices close to bottoming out in Japan ? Real Estate Japan ...

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) announced the ?koji-chika? assessed land values on March 21. These prices are current as of January 1 2013. Residential and commercial land prices fell for the fifth continuous year, although the fall in values was smaller than the last year in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, signalling a possible bottoming out of real estate prices.

Nationwide, residential land prices dropped 1.6% (they fell 2.3% in 2012) and commercial land prices were down by 2.1% (they fell 3.1% in 2012). The rate of decline in commercial land prices had shrunk from 2012 in every prefecture.

Screen Shot 2013-03-27 at 10.07.28 AM

Land around the Kawasaki and Musashikosugi Stations in Kanagawa Prefecture saw commercial land prices rise by as much as 10% in 2013 due to redevelopment around the station.

Of the 26,000 survey points nationwide, 2,008 saw an increase in land values compared to just 546 locations in 2012. Of these locations, 70% were in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.

Residential land values in Japan?s three major cities (greater Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka) fell by 0.6%, compared to a 1.3% drop in 2012, while commercial land values dropped by 0.5% compared to 1.6% in 2012. A total of 11.4% of the residential land survey points saw an increase in values compared to 4% in 2012. 12.9% of commercial land survey points saw an increase in 2013, compared to 3.1% in 2012.

Tokyo?s Minato-ku saw residential land values rise by 0.1%. Meguro, Chuo, Chiyoda and Shinagawa-ku all saw residential land values remain steady.

Of all the prefectures and administrative regions across Japan, Miyagi recorded the highest growth nationwide in residential land values with an increase of 1.4%. There was also a location in Ishinomaki City which recorded a 23.6% rise in residential land values. It should be mentioned that this was in a part of the city that was not affected by the tsunami and lots were subdivided by the council for displaced residents seeking higher ground.

In contrast, the Shikoku and San?in regions in West Japan saw land values continue their steep drop as they face a shrinking population and economic decline.

Develop A Bigger Online Brand Through These Internet Promotion ...

Posted on

There have been many novice PC users who have seen major success with Internet businesses; you may be the next Internet superstar. This article contains useful advice for anyone that wants to create an Internet business.

If you want to run a good business on the internet, then you should find out what your competition is doing. Browse sites selling products similar to your own, and make note of what they are doing right and wrong. When you notice lacking services on other websites, you should make sure these services are emphasized on your site in order to stand out from the crowd.

Give your customers the appearance that they are in complete control of the content being delivered. This is important today in a marketing world full of spam and unwanted opinions. Broadcast that it is optional for them to participate, and that will increase your visibility and credibility.

Try to use banners on your website that are not obvious in looking like a banner. Use banners that are links to click on to get to more content. Many people find banners a real turn-off, so this practice may entice them to click where they otherwise would not have.

NOTE! When it comes to Internet marketing, it is important to watch what your competition is doing. It does not matter what your niche is, you will have competition at all times.

There is tough competition on the Internet from big companies. There are two things that you can do to address this issue: compare your prices against your competitors? prices, and adjust your prices based on the comparisons. In addition, you should showcase your products in an online store of your own inside this marketplace where your customers can conveniently view your products.

Internet marketing is both alike and different than other kinds of marketing. For example, you may find that search engines are no longer paying attention to your title tags. If things get changed up, you should be willing to change your approach as well, like putting an effort into marketing via videos.

One critical factor is gaining and maintaining your customers? trust. As you develop your marketing plan, you should only consider facts and statistics that are easily proven and valid. Use testimonials, expert endorsements, and results on your site to promote your products.

Pay attention to what the other companies are doing, and try to think of new ideas based of what you learn. If they are succeeding, you need to analyze what they are doing.

NOTE! Attaching your keyword to internal links is very useful. Your page index relies on individuals spending time reading your content.

Of course, mastering any respective field or niche is going to take a lot of time and practice, but you have to get started somewhere. Utilize the info in this post to jump start your process and reach your end goal sooner.

OK, we?re pretty much finished for now?

I?ll go ahead and deliver some more online marketing methods for you 24 hours from now. Do feel free to, write your thoughts below and I?ll see what can be done to help you out.

Thank you for spending your precious time with me today and talk with you the next time.

Bloomberg: ?We're Going To Have More Visibility And Less Privacy,' Drones And Surveillance Coming

mq-9_reaper_-_090609-f-0000m-7771“We’re going to have more visibility and less privacy. I don’t see how you stop that,” admitted New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a surprisingly candid interview about the future of the surveillance state in the Big Apple. While admitting that increased surveillance was “scary” and that governments will have to be thoughtful with their laws, he seemed to side with prioritizing radical transparency, especially through the use of automated drones, “but what?s the difference whether the drone is up in the air or on the building? I mean intellectually I have trouble making a distinction.” This puts Bloomberg squarely at odds with the growing number of states and congress members either enacting or proposing moratoriums on the use of drones. Indeed, he went on to imply that the fears against drones were somewhat unjustified, especially since security cameras already exist: “The argument against using automation, it’s this craziness– oh, it’s Big Brother. Get used to it. When there’s a murder, a shooting, a robbery of something the first thing the police do is go to every single building in the neighborhood and say let’s see your security camera.” The NY Daily news notes that the New York Civil Liberties union has identified roughly 2,4000 cameras already affixed on Manhattan buildings–a presence that is likely to increase if Bloomberg’s most recent interview is to be believed. Lest Bloomberg be labeled as a surveillience hawk, the interview took on a tone of inevitability, rather than advocacy: “Everybody wants their privacy, but I don’t know how you’re going to maintain it.” Listen to part of the interview with WOR-AM host John Gambling, below. We’ll have more analysis soon.

Ukrainian capital paralyzed by snowstorm

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? The city of Kiev has declared a state of emergency after the Ukrainian capital was paralyzed by an unprecedented snowstorm that has stalled car, railway and air traffic.

The city was hit by about 50 centimeters (20 inches) of snow in the past day, more than it usually receives per month during this season.

Tractors, armored vehicles and other heavy equipment were dispatched Saturday to clear roads blocked by kilometers-long traffic jams. Desperate to get home, some Kiev drivers simply abandoned their stalled cars on the roads and set out on foot.

Kiev's main airport, Boryspil, was working with delays, the smaller Zhulyany airport was closed and Ukraine's International Airlines grounded all its planes until Sunday morning.
