CCTV camera catches proposal in penguin enclosure at London Zoo

CCTV footage has been released showing the moment a man decided to propose to his girlfriend from within the penguin enclosure at London Zoo.

James Roberts -- who won the chance to make the unusual proposal -- had told his girlfriend, Michelle Rogers, he'd won a VIP tour of the zoo.

But when she was waiting for him in the penguin enclosure, he surprised her by walking in wearing a tuxedo and getting down on one knee.

Michelle said yes? and promptly carried on feeding the penguins.

A zoo spokesman said: "All of our work in the natural world is focused on learning more about animals and their behaviour.

"On this particular occasion we felt we'd really learned something about women that we had a duty to share."

Greece surveys riot damage after austerity vote (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Firefighters doused smoldering buildings and cleanup crews swept rubble from the streets of central Athens on Monday following a night of rioting during which lawmakers approved harsh new austerity measures demanded by bailout creditors to save the nation from bankruptcy.

Police said rioters destroyed or damaged more than 110 buildings, of which 50 were burned. They included nine listed as national heritage buildings, mostly in the neoclassical style, while 30 stores were looted.

Smoke still rose from the remains of a landmark 1870 building which had housed one of the capital's most loved cinemas, the Attikon, since 1916. About 100 people held a candle-light protest outside the gutted structure late Monday.

"Criminals targeted all that was best in the city of Athens, its neoclassical monuments," said Thanassis Davakis, cultural policy chief of the conservative New Democracy party, a coalition government partner. "The damage must be swiftly redressed and the city's memory restored."

The stench of tear gas still hung in the air on Monday, choking passers-by, while traffic lights at many major intersections were out after being smashed. The Athens municipality said cleanup crews had gathered an estimated 40 tons of broken marble and rocks from the streets of the center, while railings, drainage covers and paving stones from sidewalks also suffered extensive damage.

More than 170 people were hurt in the rioting which also broke out in other Greek cities. Authorities said 109 police needed medical care after being injured by gasoline bombs, rocks and other objects hurled at them, while at least 70 protesters were hospitalized.

Police arrested 79 people ? including a 14-year-old ? and detained a further 92, while in several cases they had to escort fire crews to burning buildings after hooded and masked protesters prevented access, injuring four firefighters. Police also said they were investigating a complaint from a businessman that rioters demanded money to leave his establishment intact.

A police statement said the suspects would be charged with offenses ranging from attempted murder and possession of explosives to looting.

"(The rioters) intentionally picked traditional buildings to burn," New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras said. "These scum must know that when the time comes I will rip off their hoods."

Athens Traders' Association head Panaghis Karellas demanded the dismissal of Public Order Minister Christos Papoutsis, and said afflicted shopowners should receive state compensation.

"Once again, those in positions of responsibility, even though they should have been prepared, were unable to fulfill their duty and secure the well-being of citizens and visitors, cultural landmarks and historic buildings, public and private property and our country's international image," the association said in a statement.

The ESEE national commerce confederation said most of the badly damaged shops will very likely never open again. "The center of the capital looks as if it has been bombed," an ESEE statement said.

The rioting began Sunday afternoon after more than 100,000 protesters marched to the parliament ahead of a vote on drastic austerity measures that include axing one in five civil service jobs over the next three years and slashing the minimum wage by more than a fifth.

Lawmakers approved the bill in a 199-74 vote, to the relief of investors who pushed the Athens stock index up 4.7 percent.

The vote was crucial for the country to secure euro130 billion ($172 billion) in new rescue loans and avoid a potentially catastrophic default next month ? bankruptcy could push Greece out of Europe's euro currency union, drag down other troubled eurozone countries and further roil global markets.

The new bailout deal, which has not yet been finalized, will be combined with a massive bond swap deal to write off half the country's privately held debt, reducing Greece's debt load by about euro100 billion.

However, it could take time before the country receives any of the cash. For both deals to materialize, Greece has to persuade deeply skeptical creditors it has the will to implement spending cuts and public sector reforms that will end years of fiscal profligacy and tame gaping budget deficits.

Eurozone finance ministers meet on Wednesday to discuss the issue, after refusing to approve the plan during a meeting last week, saying Athens had to first approve the new austerity measures.

But German Finance Ministry spokeswoman Marianne Kothe said the ministers will not make a final decision on the second aid package Wednesday. She said the bond swap agreement must be finalized first, and the ministers will focus on measures "necessary for the second Greek package."

Before signing off on the bailout, the eurozone ministers also want Greek political leaders to commit in writing to uphold the austerity plan even after the general election in April. Government spokesman Pantelis Kapsis said the written guarantees are needed by Wednesday.

Although the bill passed the Parliamentary vote, there was strong dissent among the majority Socialists and rival Conservatives who make up Greece's interim coalition government. The Socialists and Conservatives expelled the 22 and 21 lawmakers respectively, reducing their majority in the 300-member parliament from 236 to 193.

Germany gave the vote result a cautious welcome, with Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle describing it as "a first significant step along the right road."

"However, the actual difficult work with implementing the reforms that have been agreed on is only just starting now," he said. "That is the decisive precondition for Germany and the other euro partners being able to stand by Greece with a further rescue package."

The new austerity comes after two years of deep spending cuts and repeated tax hikes that have sent unemployment soaring to more than 20 percent and left the country struggling through a fifth year of recession.

Those measures were taken in return for a first, euro110 billion ($145 billion) package of rescue loans, but despite the cutbacks, Greece repeatedly failed to meet its targets in reducing its debt and deficit and increasing economic competitiveness.

3 Home Improvement Recommendations You May Not Know | Best ...

When you decide to do a home improvement project, you should do ones that promote safety at your house. For example, every year there are that will fire in homes along with other buildings caused by faulty electrical devices. If you suspect there is an electrical fireplace or problem, merely feel the wall near the suspect area for warmth. More than likely, if the fire is raging, you will smell smoke sooner or later. If your electrical cord is too hot, this means there is an excessive amount of current in the cables themselves. We will talk about several relatively simple home improvement projects related to electrical safety.

For energy efficient garage doors contact Sandy Springs garage door repair. Do you have gutters about your house? If you do, you need to check to make sure the water is not blocked by leaves. Autumn leaves can be very poor in certain locations and many people understand the effects. Your best bet is to make sure that your gutters remain free from leaves as much as possible. Just make sure that they can allow the water to flow. Just one possible consequence of clogged gutters is you can experience water flood. You want to avoid that condition since it can cause water intrusion into your basement.

If your drinking water is draining out of your property or home, especially if it rains a lot, you?re okay. If it is not draining, as could the 2 major problems. You should have a positive incline leading away from your home for the water to drain adequately. An underground water flow system can also help with this particular problem. It is very simple to create a drainage system. You just dig the shallow trench, put in PVC material pipe with holes, and cover it up with rocks or stones. Obviously, the tubes that carries the water will lead from your house, not towards it. You can do this drainage program very quickly and it will work efficiently for years. If your garage doors need to be repaired or replaced contact garage door repair Sandy Springs.

We all know that costs keep rising, particularly the cost of energy. It?s interesting that several things are known to never decrease in price, so they can be prepared for because you always know what to expect. You will need to discover ways to conserve energy by being more efficient, because you know the costs are increasing. For your fridge to run the most efficient, it has coils in the back again that need to have a continuous air flow. It is up to you to make sure the normal ventilation doesn?t become restricted. Excessive buildup of dust on the circles will also lower your refrigerator?s efficiency.

Some home improvement projects have a genuine security component, and you have to understand this. The danger for some people is they have no idea regarding such issues, and often they proceed with no clue. It might kill you, or at best injure you really badly if you do the incorrect thing. So stay away from anything that has to do with load characteristics changing, or doing anything at all that involves electricity.

Choosing a lamp as ornaments to decorate the room | Home ...

Important to determine the shape and type of light in your dwelling. Of course, after determining the desirable lighting system in your room. Because instead of giving birth that you want even lighting can damage your home lighting that had been originally planned.

Consider also the function and aesthetic value when choosing a lamp. There are four types of lights to choose from for your dwelling, the hanging lamp, working lamps, wall lamps and bedside lamps.

A chandelier hanging lights that are mounted on the ceiling of the house. These lights are usually placed in the main rooms, such as family room or living room. Things that require attention when choosing a chandelier is to be adjusted to the style of home design and adjust well to the vast size of the chandelier room. For chandeliers, crystal chandelier remains a favorite today.

The design of this lamp as well as more diverse, from classical to minimalist model. The attraction is the beauty of this lamp that hung like a wine crystal, the composition of glass candles that make up twigs or glass tubes are arranged symmetrically to the modern style.

Work lights are usually presented in the area or room used for work such as in kitchens, home office and reading room (library). The model is very diverse, there is a table lamp, downlight and lamp stand (standing lamp). There is a decorative feature rather than a function (not as light as wood craft decoration lamps, etc.). Not only the variety of models, the shape is even more varied. This lamp has a characteristic bright flame.

Wall lamps are used as wall hangings or give the effect of light on the wall. This type of lamp further highlight the aesthetic value rather than its functional value as a torch. Many species such as light wood (wood lamps), ceramic lamps, handmade lamps, etc.. Some call it the light decorative. Hence the selection of this type of lamp should be adjusted to the shape, style and interior design. For homes with a minimalist design will match the shape of a box wall lamps are small. CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) ? Hall of Fame boxing trainer Angelo Dundee was remembered Friday as a master motivator and a man who left a legacy of kindness that was just as impressive as what he accomplished in the ring molding a record 15 world champions, including Muhammad Ali.

"If you only knew him as a trainer, you missed out on something pretty special," the Rev. Stephen King said, beginning the funeral service Friday for Dundee, who died last week at the age of 90.

Ali was among about 600 people who paid final respects at the Countryside Christian Center. The self-proclaimed "Greatest" wore a black suit and sunglasses and sat in front of the casket and a stage lined with flowers, pictures, paintings, and a pair of red boxing gloves sitting on a stool.

Ali's wife, Lonnie, spoke during the service on behalf of her husband, who has Parkinson's disease.

"He used to call us all the time and say it doesn't cost nothing to be nice. ... It was like his mantra," she said. "Whenever we saw Angelo there was a smile of his face. He was always a happy guy."

"You can't call too many men sweet. Angelo Dundee was a sweet man," added former NFL player Ian Beckles, who co-hosts a local radio show and became friends with the legendary trainer after Dundee moved to the Tampa Bay area a few years ago.

"Angelo didn't give you a choice," Beckles added. "You had to love him."

That was the prevailing sentiment throughout the 80-minute service attended by many of the friends Dundee made through boxing and his charitable endeavors, including promoter Bob Arum and former heavyweight champion Pinklon Thomas.

"As a man, he taught me so much," Thomas said before the service.

Arum was among the speakers, calling Dundee "one of the nicest people I ever met." Former Ali business manager Gene Kilroy talked about the bond that the trainer and boxer retained long after both retired.

"You can't buy loyalty today," Kilroy said. "Boxing has lost a great man."

Dundee died Feb. 1 at his apartment. His son said he recently had been hospitalized for a blood clot and briefly spent time in a rehabilitation center before returning home, where he was surrounded by family members when he died.

Best known for being Ali's corner man for most of the former heavyweight champion's career, Dundee was a brilliant motivator who trained 14 other world champions, including Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, Carmen Basilio and Jose Napoles.

"When you think about the beauty of Angelo, when you think about the personalities that he had to coach and train, I actually have to start with Muhammad," Lonnie Ali said.

"Muhammad's not an easy person when it comes to boxing because Muhammad thought he knew how to train himself. He had that ego. But Angelo somehow realized that the best way to make Muhammad great was to get out of his way, to let him do his thing. He really didn't have to coach him. He just had to come in and do the little things. ... Angelo was able to do that with each and every one of his fighters."

Dundee's career, which led to his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992, spanned six decades. He last got together with Ali for The Greatest's 70th birthday party last month in Louisville, Ky. ? a visit that Dundee's son said meant a lot to his father.

With the native of south Philadelphia in his corner, Ali became the first to win the heavyweight title three times. Dundee began working with Leonard late in Ali's career and trained him for many of the former welterweight champion's biggest fights, too.

Dundee joined Foreman in 1994 to help him become the oldest heavyweight champion at age 45.

"He made all of our lives better," said Arum, who promoted some of Ali's biggest bouts.

"Dad was a simple guy. He never thought he was anything special," Jimmy Dundee said, adding that his father treated everyone he met ? from wide-eyed little kids on the street to the fighters he helped win championships ? the same.

"Dad loved everyone. No one wasn't his friend. We've got people here from the rehab center where he stayed six days. ... All the fighters in dad's past life loved him because they weren't fighters, they were family."

Two hours before the service, Jimmy Dundee smiled while recalling some of his father's most memorable moments in boxing, including refusing to allow a then young Cassius Clay to quit in his first title fight against Sonny Liston, and practically willing Leonard to shrug off a beating he was taking from Thomas Hearns to win a championship bout.

"When you walk through history, there are moments you have to grab to make them special," the son said. "Dad always seemed to be in the right place at the right time."

Al-Shabab, al-Qaida: Linkup of groups in decline? (AP)

NAIROBI, Kenya ? Al-Qaida's decision to formally extend its terror franchise to what once was a nationalist movement in Somalia may only be a desperate joining of hands to prop up two militant groups that are both losing popular support and facing increasingly deadly military attacks, analysts said Friday.

Somalia's main militant group, al-Shabab, and al-Qaida have been patting each other on the back for years. On Thursday, al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri formalized the relationship by giving "glad tidings" that al-Shabab had joined al-Qaida.

Al-Shabab, which began as a movement to oust Ethiopian troops from Somalia some six years ago, has long been using terror tactics like suicide bombings and car bombings against the weak Somali government and African Union troops in Mogadishu.

The group also has hosted al-Qaida and other foreign fighters with experience in Iraq and the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.

Al-Qaida also could seek to utilize several dozen U.S. citizens ? mostly of Somali descent ? among al-Shabab's ranks who U.S. officials fear could use their American passports to travel back to the U.S. and carry out attacks.

The Somali government dismissed Thursday's announcement as non-news, given the close ties between al-Shabab and al-Qaida over the years.

Abdi Rashid, a Somalia expert, said it's not clear what benefit al-Qaida gets out of the newly announced partnership, given that al-Shabab has been losing large chunks of territory to the East African militaries fighting it in Somalia.

Only a year ago, al-Shabab held sway in most of Mogadishu and much of south-central Somalia. But the group is now losing its grip on the country.

"For me the message they are sending is clear. It is basically an admission that their conventional militarily capabilities probably cannot recover so the only way forward they have in the so-called jihad is to merge with al-Qaida in the terror campaign," said Rashid, a former Somalia analyst with the International Crisis Group who is setting up an independent policy forum.

Al-Shabab leaders have pledged allegiance to al-Qaida in the past, releasing a video in 2009 called "At Your Service Osama!" The same year, the late al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden released a video in which he made encouraging comments about the Somali insurgency.

Rashid said that al-Qaida has lost power in recent years as well.

"Not only has its leaders been completely decimated by U.S. strikes in Pakistan and Afghanistan but they have lost whatever public support they had in Africa and the Middle East. The Arab Spring is testimony to the fact that the gravity they once had is probably over."

Al-Shabab is being hit from three sides in Somalia. In Mogadishu, African Union forces from Uganda and Burundi have largely pushed al-Shabab out of the capital, though they still can carry out terror attacks. Kenyan forces who moved into Somalia in October are pressuring al-Shabab from the south, and Ethiopian forces are pressuring them from the west.

That pressure ? along with a drop in popular support because of the harsh, Taliban-style social rules the group imposes ? are among the reasons al-Shabab wanted the new al-Qaida brand name, said Abdi Hassan, a former al-Shabab fighter.

"They are worried about their future," Hassan said. "They want to be able to join other al-Qaida forces when they are defeated in Somalia."

Al-Shabab is only the latest al-Qaida franchise to join the movement started by bin Laden in the late 1980s. A militant group in Iraq named Tawhid wa Jihad became al-Qaida in Iraq after an announcement similar to al-Zawahiri's on Thursday.

The group also has branches in North Africa ? Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb ? and in Yemen ? Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. That last group is based only a short boat ride from Somalia, and Hassan said that several foreign fighters once based in Somalia have fled there following the deaths of several al-Qaida leaders in Somalia in recent years.

Several analysts noted that the new partnership internationalizes al-Qaida's message even more. Adjoa Anyimadu, a researcher at the Africa program at Chatham House in London, said al-Qaida may be attracted to al-Shabab's story line of struggle to free an Islamic country from Western influence.

Referring to al-Zawahri's issuance of "glad tidings" to al-Shabab, Somalia Information Minister Abdulkadir Hussein Mohamed said the announcement was also glad tidings for the Somali government.

"The Somali government is actually very pleased that the time for al-Shabab to masquerade as an indigenous Somali-Islamic organization is gone forever," he said. "The whole international community knows now what we here in Somalia knew for a long time and should join our fight against al-Qaida in Somalia unreservedly."

Al-Shabab's most spectacular international terror attack occurred in July 2010 while crowds watched the World Cup final on TV in Kampala, Uganda. Bombs exploded at two locations, killing 76 people.

Since Kenya's military moved into Somalia in October, al-Shabab has threatened to attack the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, and Anyimadu said that the al-Qaida merger could raise the risk of an attack.

"They have shown the capacity and the skill and I think the Kampala attack was clearly ? if you want to call it this ? a rite of passage," Abdi said. "While I'm not discounting the possibility of some kind of attack to show 'We are worthy' of being part of the fold, I don't think one can make that link immediately."

Magnus Ranstorp of the Swedish National Defence College said the two terror groups joined together because they need one another. He said it was possible al-Shabab would change its focus to meet al-Qaida's broader agenda.

"This is a way for al-Zawahiri to maintain his relevance," he said. "It's obvious that they (al-Qaida) are putting more efforts into North Africa, with AQIM, but also in the belt of instability and insecurity ? Yemen and Somalia."
