Junior Tori Bowie won the 2011 National Championship in the women?s long jump on the opening day at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's track and field team added yet another milestone to the already outstanding season when the Golden Eagles finished 10th in the recently completed 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Des Moines, Iowa.

Tori Bowie was the highlight of the event as she her won her first outdoor long jump title and one of four Conference USA NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field titles when she cleared 21-9.5" (6.64m) on her fifth long jump in the final round. Teammates Ganna Demydova and Ke'Airra Jones followed with All-America honors in the triple and high jumps, respectively.

Demydova captured a bronze medal in the triple jump after she leaped 13.64m (44-9'), while Jones cleared 1.83m (6-0") for fourth place. Those performances gave the Golden Eagles 21 points and a school-best 10th place finish in the team standings, the third highest of any previous C-USA team.

"I feel so proud to be a Southern Miss Golden Eagle," Head Coach Kevin Stephen said. "What these young ladies did this past weekend is historic. For a University our size to have a top ten finish in the NCAA Championship is an incredible accomplishment. It was definitely a whole team effort starting with my assistant coaches, Shane Brandford, Adrian Ghioroaie, and Keri Frazier and our volunteer assistants. Our young ladies worked hard all year and gave their very best. Our athletic trainers were rock stars for us this year keeping us healthy."
